CASE STUDIES (continued)

Case 8 – Sewer Recovery:
Chateau Cupertino Senior Living Facility located in Cupertino, CA

Retroactive Recovery: $65,000
Go Forward: $30,000 /yr

We analyzed the sewer charges, which were actually located on the property tax bill, and determined that the facility actually deserved to be placed in a different rate category.

Sanitation District personnel initially refused our request for re-classification.  Undeterred, we made a formal appearance before the Board of Directors of the Sanitation district, and were ultimately successful in petitioning for the reclassification.

Case 9 – Electric Recovery:
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Retroactive Recovery: $65K
Go Forward: N/A

Our client received a bill for a single meter from their utility for $50,000. The utility claimed that they had mistakenly neglected to bill for a particular meter for several years – since the initial meter installation. Repeatedly, what our client heard from the utility as a result of their own inquiries was, “We discovered that we should have originally assigned the meter to you several years ago; we have read the meter, the reading is the reading, and you owe the total we claim.”

We investigated the meter’s settings and applied our expertise of how electrical loads are billed. From that, we proved to the utility that it was not mathematically possible for the meter to have recorded the amount of electricity they utility claimed. The utility agreed with our calculations and reduced their bill by two thirds.

Case 10 – Sewer Recovery
Fortune 500 Pharmacy headquartered in Harrisburg, PA

Retroactive Recovery: N/A
Go Forward: $2,400 /yr.

This client was getting charged for sewer costs based on all the water used by one of their rural stores. Our investigation uncovered that the store’s single water meter measured use for both the store’s internal water consumption and for its landscaping needs. We negotiated a special rate for the store with the town-run utility.

Case 10 – Sewer Recovery:
Fortune 500 Home Furnishings / Kitchenware retailer – headquartered in San Francisco, CA.

Retroactive Recovery: $5,000 /yr
Go Forward: $5,000 /yr

The tariffs of a Midwest electric utility provided for an option to re-bill the entire first year of a new commercial account on a more favorable rate, provided that the customer asked within the first 365 days. We saw that a qualified store of our client could get a refund of $5,000, so we initiated the option with the utility.
